Current Bill Summary

SB 272 - This act allows the owner of a noncommercial motor vehicle to have insurance covering himself as the operator of any motor vehicle driven by him in lieu of insurance covering the vehicle. Under an operator's policy of liability insurance, the policy will only cover the person who is listed as the named insured in the policy. The operator's policy will not provide coverage for other drivers who drive the owner's motor vehicle. A person who has an operator's policy shall not allow another person to drive his or her motor vehicle unless that person has appropriate liability coverage. An insurance company issuing an operator's policy will not be liable for any accident incurred by a permissive driver; the owner of the motor vehicle and the permissive driver will be liable for any damages from an accident. An operator's policy is not available to commercial entities such as motor vehicle dealers or manufacturers.
